Do you skip image optimization in SEO? If you do that, it can be missed you out from image traffics and also makes problem in SEO ON Page Optimization.
Images can drive a lot of traffic from Google or other image search engine results. Even SEO optimizes images are more important to make your website search engine and users friendly. When search engine crawlers visit your site for indexing, that can’t see your website images.
In this case, why is it important for search engine?
Every search engine always tries to measure the relevancy of contents while those try to find image’s details by images Alternative (ALT) tag, images file name, images description, the image caption and so on to determine the relevancy.
Come to the point…
What should you follow for better image optimization?
There are a lot factors you should give attention. In this post, I’m going to share with you a complete concept which helps you step by step for image optimization.
1. Image File Name
Sometimes many people don’t conscious about their image file name. But it’s most important to Google and other search engines because by getting proper file name, Google can figure out what about the image about and what does it relate with content. So what do you need to follow?
Keep your image file name with targeted rich keyword and also make it relevant to your content. I just show you an example of good and bad both practices below to write image file name.
Good Practice: Keyword-Research.jpg (It makes sense)
Bad Practice: Image001.jpg (It doesn’t make any sense what about the image about)
2. Keyword-rich ALT tag
ALT means alternative. When browsers can’t load images properly or taking too much time for loading, ALT text shows in the place of the image. On the other point, It adds the SEO value of your website. Not only for search engine, it also helps visitors to understand the image about while they turn off their images loading in the browser. Anyway, How to write an ALT tag? The best practice follow by the bellows direction.
- Write keyword rich ALT text in plain text
- Don’t use generic terms for ALT text
- Don’t make it long
- Don’t use same ALT text on all images
- Be sure the ALT tag describes the image about
- Don’t keyword stuffing
- Example to write ALT text: competitors analysis.jpg
3. Image File Size and Pixel
Image pixel is also a vital part of image optimization and important for your website speed. It’s not good practice to use a large image such as 3000*1500 pixel based image or more. Because if you use large image, it’ll make your webpage slower for loading. Keep your every image size as small as you can for faster loading and better indexing.
Keep following my suggestion below:
- Use specific image size for your content.
- Keep your image size smaller by using image editing tools.
- Try to keep your image size below 70KB.
When people are reading your content, they first review your content first to last. Caption helps readers to understand what actually image and content about. It’s not only important for visitors, but also search engine and as well as having a little impact for traffics.
In 2012, KissMetric even stated that:
“CAPTIONS UNDER IMAGES ARE READ ON AVERAGE 300% MORE THAN THE BODY COPY ITSELF, SO NOT USING THEM, OR NOT USING THEM CORRECTLY, MEANS MISSING OUT ON AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE A HUGE NUMBER OF POTENTIAL READERS.”
- Don’t write captions for focus keywords.
- Write caption for describing the image about.
- Don’t make it long.
5. Image Description
Search engines measure image relevancy by image description also. For better image optimization, write image details in the image description.
- Describe your images about within one line
- Don’t forget to use keyword in the description
6. Relevant to content
Before starting to read any content, people first scan the content outlook and topics when right image can catch visitors minds. Without relevant, using an image in a content worthless. Even we know that search engine is giving much value on relevancy. So why do you skip it? Don’t use irrelevant images for your content.
7. Image Linking
Proper image linking consider as a good practice in SEO. While you are going to use a link in your image, don’t forget to use the right anchor text. Better to write anchor text with your keywords. Sometimes you need to embed an image from another site, there you must follow these rules.
8. Reduce Image Size
The smallest size images can make your website loading faster and faster. But sometimes you face a problem with image quality and have to use those images for your site. In here, I’m giving you a solution. If you use WordPress, you can use various plugins to reduce image file size without affecting the quality. Also, there are many online and offline photo editing tools you can use for that purpose. I’ve explained in more details below.

9. Image Sitemap
The Image sitemap can be added more SEO value. If your target to get traffics from images, then it would be great to do. Although you submit a sitemap into Google webmaster, you can add image sitemap there.
Google already assured about that:
“TO GIVE GOOGLE INFORMATION ABOUT IMAGES ON YOUR SITE, YOU’LL NEED TO ADD AN IMAGE-SPECIFIC TAGS TO A SITEMAP. YOU CAN USE A SEPARATE SITEMAP TO LIST IMAGES, OR YOU CAN ADD IMAGE INFORMATION TO AN EXISTING SITEMAP. USE THE METHOD WORKS FOR YOU!”
While search engine crawlers can’t see any images, then why do we submit an image sitemap to Google? Again, that sitemap helps Google to show up in search engine result. Here you can read Google images publishing Guidelines which will give you the right way to do image optimization.
